The details emerged as a response to questions raised in a parliamentary session. Smt. Priyanka Chaturvedi inquired whether it is true that the Railways currently faces a shortage of over 3.12 lakh (3,12,000) vacant posts. The questions further sought specific details if the information was affirmative, or if not, the precise zone-wise count of vacant posts across the country, along with the steps being taken by the government to fill these positions.
Official Response from Ministry of Railways
The Government of India, Ministry of Railways, officially provided a response to these inquiries. The reply, given by Shri Ashwini on March 17, 2023, in the Rajya Sabha, specifically addressed unstarred question number 2072 by Smt. Priyanka Chaturvedi concerning the shortage of staff in Indian Railways. The response outlined the detailed breakdown of vacant posts.

Upcoming Railway Recruitment Notifications
The significant number of vacant posts, partly due to ongoing retirements within the Railways, will be addressed through expedited recruitment processes. The RTI response highlights that a major recruitment drive for Level 1 (Group D) is anticipated, with 1,03,000 posts expected to be notified first. Following this, recruitments for Loco Pilot, Technician, and RPF positions are also on the horizon.
These recruitment notifications are tentatively expected between April and May.
